Lancasters

Hello and welcome to... Lancasters!
We are a lovely mix of curious and passionate young learners from year 4 . We are looking forward to sharing with you all the fantastic learning that takes place in our classroom. In Lancasters, we strive to always try our best whilst having fun along the way, so please keep checking our class web page for news and updates. We are taught by Miss Gilpin (Mrs Robinson on a Thursday afternoon) and also have the wonderful Miss Bembridge & Miss Humphreys to help us with our learning. Our PE lessons are on a Monday and Friday so the children need to come into school dressed in weather appropriate kits on these days. With it being the summer term, we will try and get outside for our PE lessons as much as possible.
Homework
Each week there will be a 10 minute session set on Times Table Rockstars. The log in details can be found on the inside of your child's reading record. On a Monday, one of the adults in class will check your child's reading record to see that they have recorded 3 reading sessions throughout the week. These can be completed in school or at home reading with an adult or independently.
Summer - Term 1
Hello and welcome back to school after our Easter break. We hope you had a wonderful holiday and we are excited to have you back with lots of exciting learning planned for the brand new term. Our theme this term is 'Express Yourself'.
In English this term, we will be focusing on the text ‘The Day I Swapped my Dad for Two Goldfish’ by Neil Gaimen. We will be revisiting understanding and applying the features of a persuasive text by using role play and drama to explore different persuasive scenarios. We will discuss the effectiveness of the strategies used. We will investigate how a particular view can be most convincingly presented by ordering and linking ideas together using different persuasive techniques to support / reinforce an argument. We will use the knowledge we have gained to create an independent speech / presentation to persuade our headteacher to change something in school. Later on in the term, we will be using the text ‘Song of the Dolphin Boy’ by Elizabeth Laird to understand and apply the features of a persuasive letter. We will create an independent letter to encourage people to protect our sea from the point of view of the character Finn.
In our Book Dive sessions, we will be exploring the books ‘King Arthur and the Knights at the Round Table’ by Marcia Williams and ‘The Lost Words by Robert Macfarlane.

In History this term our learning is based around the question ‘How did the Anglo-Saxons develop Britain?”. We will begin our learning by discovering who the Anglo-Saxons were and what else was going on in the world at that time. We will look at their lives, homes and culture. We will explore the conflict between the Picts and the Scots and learn how the Anglo-Saxons changed Britain. We will look at Anglo-Saxon runes and what the different symbols represent. To complete our learning, we will look at Sutton Hoo – a place where archaeologists have found lots of fascinating artefacts, including the imprint of a ship.

In Science, it is our focus on the ‘Earth Term’. We will be exploring deforestation and finding out why it is harmful to our environment. We will then focus on the reasons around deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest and how it is harmful to our planet. We will look at the importance of the company Green Peace and how they help indigenous tribes. We will then show our knowledge of deforestation in a variety of ways. Towards the end of term, we will learn about the organisation Harry Lynch – One Tree Planted and how they are fighting deforestation across the globe.
